Amazon VPC, Amazon Route 53, and Amazon CloudFront: Byte Burger’s Perimeter
A restaurant needs more than a kitchen: it needs an address, a boundary, a fast way to serve nearby customers, and private supply routes.
The Business Goal
Byte Burger’s office-lunch promotion goes wrong in three ways at once. Some customers reach yesterday’s menu. The new internal checkout service cannot reach its S3 receipt bucket. And an engineer asks whether making the kitchen public will fix it.
The Story
The General Manager separates the perimeter into jobs. The property line defines where Byte Burger’s systems live. The street address tells customers where to go. A lunchtime food truck serves popular menu material near the office. A private supplier gate reaches trusted suppliers without exposing the kitchen. None of those jobs is “open every door.”
Meet the AWS Service
Amazon VPC provides a logically isolated network boundary for AWS resources. Route 53 provides DNS and traffic-routing capabilities. CloudFront serves cached content from edge locations close to viewers. Together, they control where a request starts and which path it can use; the application still needs correct permissions, routes, security rules, and origin behavior.
Core idea: The perimeter gives requests a safe, intentional path—it does not make every component public or every response current.
How It Works
The perimeter has four questions:
- Where does the resource live? VPC and subnet.
- Who can reach it? Security group, NACL, routing, and application policy.
- What stable name does a caller use? Route 53 DNS.
- Can a response be served nearby? CloudFront cache and origin behavior.
Architectural Mapping
Customer → Route 53 address → CloudFront food truck → origin / API
Internal kitchen → private route → VPC endpoint or NAT → dependency
When to Use It
- An application needs a stable public or internal name
- Resources must remain private while still reaching approved dependencies
- Static or safely cacheable content should be served near users
When Not to Use It
- You are looking for a replacement for API authorization or IAM permissions
- You need ELB behavior already owned by the Compute story
Painkiller
Problem: Customers and services need correct paths without exposing the kitchen.
Pain: Ad hoc addresses and broad public access create fragility and risk.
AWS solution: VPC, Route 53, CloudFront, endpoints, and NAT make each path intentional.

A Note From the Author
The perimeter is a map, not an automatic shield. Customer configuration still determines routes, security controls, DNS records, cache behavior, and costs. This section stays at application-developer depth: choosing and troubleshooting a request path rather than attempting a complete network-engineering treatment.
