Amazon API Gateway and AWS SDK: The Byte Burger Contract

Interfaces stay dependable when each caller uses the correct door and each door states its limits.

The Business Goal

By closing time, Byte Burger had accumulated doors.

The mobile app wanted a customer API. A delivery partner wanted a governed contract and meter. A Lambda function wanted DynamoDB. A browser wanted one photo upload. An analyst wanted every page of a report.

The team asked which door was “best.”

Nia asked who was standing outside it.

The Story

Byte Burger posted four signs.

No sign claimed to solve every request.

That was the point.

How It Works

Choose the Caller First

The caller determines the boundary. A mobile client should not discover an internal Lambda name. A Lambda function should not need a public API Gateway URL merely to write DynamoDB. A browser upload should not receive a general AWS role.

Treat Errors as Contract

Document successful and failure responses. Validate input at the right layer. Distinguish authentication, authorization, validation, conflict, throttling, and backend failure. Clients need safe retry behavior and idempotency rules.

Observe the Front and the Kitchen

Monitor API latency, 4xx and 5xx outcomes, throttles, cache behavior, authorization failures, SDK final exceptions, and service request identifiers. Avoid logging tokens, authorization headers, presigned URLs, or sensitive payloads.

Pay for the Boundary You Need

Gateway requests, data transfer, caching, custom-domain components, SDK-driven service requests, retries, and pagination all have cost consequences. Reduce needless calls before attempting to hide their cost.

The first path defines an application contract; the second delegates one constrained object request.

When to Use It

Use this decision model whenever a new integration is proposed: identify the caller, define the contract, choose the narrowest appropriate credential and route, then design failures before traffic arrives.

When Not to Use It

Do not put every service call behind a public HTTP API. Do not let convenience create a credential path broader than the operation requires.

Painkiller

Problem: Teams choose interfaces by habit and expose internal details or credentials to the wrong caller.
Pain: APIs become brittle, permissions broaden, retries duplicate work, and operations become hard to explain.
AWS solution: Match API Gateway, SDK clients, role credentials, usage controls, and presigned URLs to the caller and the contract.

The API says what a caller may request. The service implementation decides how the request is fulfilled.

A Note From the Author

Byte Burger separates entrances more cleanly than production systems do. One request can cross API Gateway, Lambda, an SDK, queues, databases, and third-party APIs. Preserve correlation IDs and request context while keeping credentials and sensitive payloads out of logs.

Nia stopped asking which door was most powerful.

She asked who needed to enter, what they were allowed to ask for, and what had to happen after the answer was uncertain.

A boundary is useful when it makes both access and failure understandable.
